WAKE UP, IT'S TUNESDAY

we love this duo, this song and especially this video.
we're no music critics by any stretch, but we'd give wye oak a darling review if given the opportunity.

this song in particular manages to sound hopeful and morose at the same time-- lending itself to a new level of transcendental emotional confusion.  yeah, that's some bull-shhh.

whatevs. we know we like it and we know you should too.

JUST ANOTHER MANLY MONDAY: MATT BERNINGER

pour yourself a glass of wine, kind reader. it's matt berninger.

frontman of brooklyn-based rock band the national, this manly man is a perfect piece of ass. he's the new blue blood. he's a confident liar. he's showered and blue-blazered. he's brave and kind. he's... well.... he's one of our favorite manly men.

what a dapper dude. that suit, that beard, that album, that voice. but seriously-- that voice

i was lucky enough to see matt berninger perform with the national at bonnaroo last summer and it remains one of my favorite musical experiences to date. he killed it. half way through the show, mr. berninger poured himself a glass of white wine and sent another through the crowd to a very lucky dude in the audience. classy, matt, classy. i guess all the wine isn't for you after all.

well, it should be.

matt's lyric book from high violet. poetic brilliance, people.

oh my gosh. regain composure.

16-month-old isla is a lucky lady. her daddy wears a leather jacket.

and her lullabies must be pretty kick-ass.

ok-- so we know he can pull off a very masculine beard, but we're big fans of the stubble/bold-frame glasses combo.

very big fans indeed.

and that necktie is superb ( i hate the word superb.)

it's a terrible love, matt berninger.

WORDLESS AND WONDERFUL

well, not entirely wordless. call me lazy, call me tired, a lot of times i'm both... but appreciate the fact that you don't have to read any of my absurd ranting, because all i want you to do today is relax, and enjoy these (mostly stark) and stunning images that i find entirely captivating, for a variety of reasons. (i will say that one is because i love people, and sometimes just looking at them is so fascinating).

JUST ANOTHER MANLY MONDAY: THEODORE ROOSEVELT

the man died 92 years ago, but his masculinity remains unchallenged. theodore roosevelt, or teddy as we'll affectionately call him, was quite a manly man.

you probably knew he was the 26th president of the united states, his fifth cousin franklin frowns on our dimes, and probably 78% of you know his gigantic head is carved into mount rushmore, but this dude had a whole lot more going on. for one thing, that 'stache, but who knew the man boxed at harvard university?

teddy's senior portrait from harvard (notice the big stick-- {no not that one, gross}-- we'll come back to that later) where he developed an interest in natural history and naval strategy. from here, he goes on to ranch cattle in the dakotas

so far, teddy's hovering around a 7 on the manly-scale.

hold on to your kerchief, folks, it only gets manlier from here.

while in dakota territory, teddy became deputy sheriff and once captured three outlaws who'd stolen his riverboat. rather than hang them and yield to established law procedures in place of vigilante justice, he led them overland to a fair trial, guarding them over forty hours without sleep.

oh, and he read tolstoy to keep him awake.

so, now he's up to an 8 on the manly-scale. big deal, right? its not like he fought police corruption or led a cavalry regiment in the spanish-american war or became president or anything...

well, he did. teddy roosevelt became the youngest president of the united states (at age 42) in 1901 after mckinley's assassination-- his motto, "speak softly, but carry a big stick."

see? we told you we'd come back to that harvard picture.

as president, teddy established one of the nation's first conservation programs, legislated five national parks, orchestrated the completion of the panama canal, negotiated an end to the russo-japanese war and was the first american to win the nobel peace prize.

if you're interested in the lovely souvenir scarf or panama sunglasses, kind reader, you can follow the links to your fancy.

meanwhile, teddy's way past 8 and is somewhere between 11 and 12 on the manly-scale (that's out of 10, y'all.)

after leaving office in 1908, roosevelt skips the recliner and season tickets to the new york jets and embarks on a safari to africa and an extensive tour of europe and south america.

teddy contracted malaria while in south america which greatly affected his health. he died shortly thereafter at age 60.

there you have it-- roosevelt tips the manly-scale at about a 13.5. we love him, america loves him and children everywhere unwittingly pay homage to him-- yes, he is also responsible for that stuffed bear we call "teddy."

here's to you, theodore roosevelt.

MIXTAPE: SEPTEMBER SLUMBER

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

i'm just gonna get right into it: if you want to be lulled to sleep by sweet, melodic tunes then this is the mix for you. this month i've learned the value of a good sleep mix, hopefully you'll enjoy this one whether you're impressing a new bedfellow or just embracing the sleepy september blues.

LANA DEL REY - VIDEO GAMES
let me just be honest, i am entirely obsessed with/by/for this song. her voice is so beautifully haunting and the instrumentals are just wonderful. the perfect start to your drift into dreaming.

SUFJAN STEVENS - BARN OWL, NIGHT KILLER
don't be fooled by the title. another sweet, sweet tune sung in sufie's sexy falsetto will make you wonder why you haven't spent half your life trying to meet him.

RADIOHEAD - NO SURPRISES
it really shouldn't come as a surprise that this song is on our september sleep mix. what was that? this song is overplayed and old? we don't care. just go back to sleep.

THE ANTLERS - I DON'T WANT LOVE
if you gave me a nickel for how many times i have listened to the antlers' album burst apart, i'd probably drop out of school and buy some new shoes. i can guarantee you i'd be back in school within a few weeks, but that's beside the point.

BON IVER - RE: STACKS
justin vernon, you dog. see also: holocene

MY BUBBA & MI - I WILL NEVER LOVE A YOUNG BOY AGAIN
don't take us too literally, y'all. i'm sure we'll love again. but for now, let this talented female trio melt all your stress away via harmonica, guitar, and vocal cord.

BEACH HOUSE - ZEBRA
this song is awesome. one of the coolest chord progressions i've heard. "you know you're gold, you don't have to worry none"

ANGUS & JULIA STONE - YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT
what?! is this real?! yes. yes, it is. soak it in, soak it up, soak it out. do whatever you need to appreciate the fact that this brother/sister folk duo is covering olivia newton-john and john travolta circa tight leather pants.

BON IVER - YOUR LOVE
am i blowing your mind yet? bon iver covers the outfield. i would apologize for the bon iver overload, but it's a good thing.

COUER DE PIRATE - COMMES DE ENFANTS
something about kids and pirate hearts, it's in french, i don't know. but that voice! adorable. and if you speak english we all know everything is cooler in a foreign language.

IRON WINE FEAT. CALEXICO - WILD HORSES
ok, ok before you get mad at me for putting wild horses on this mix, just listen to that pedal steel! mmm.

BAND OF HORSES - ST. AUGUSTINE
"at the end of the night, we've all seen better days" how apropos.

HENRY MANCINI - MOON RIVER
a classic. i want to sing this to my kiddies one day. and to be frank, i'm pretty sure this isn't audrey hepburn singing, but we can all just pretend...

MUSE - BLACKOUT
so i have some good memories attached to this song. simple, but good. i thought i'd share the tune with you. again with the haunting voice/instrumental combo, i hope you're sleepy by now and not scared shitless.

BON IVER - THE PARK
a feist cover! we love leslie feist. who doesn't? "the seasons have changed from present to past"

SHE & HIM - IF YOU CAN'T SLEEP
our last ditch effort to bring you into silent slumber. we're pulling out the big guns here, folks. this is one of the sleepiest, most saccharine, airy, and lovely songs in the world. another beautiful lullaby to sing to the chilluns.

sweet dreams, dears.
