this month's playlist is dedicated to the miserable lovers, the confused romantics and the hopelessly smitten. we've been there. you've probably been there too-- we usually call it "love," but maybe sometimes it's hate? maybe it's that wretched, beautiful, miserable-yet-intoxicating evolution of both.
maybe we like the duality.
in any case, we've put together this little mixtape to reflect the complexity of "being in love." we hope you like it as much as we do.
BROKEN BELLS - THE GHOST INSIDE
isn't inner turmoil usually the birthplace of relationship angst? tragically danceable, people.
TEGAN & SARA - SENTIMENTAL TUNE
you're fighting because you care, right? "hardhearted, don't worry i'm ready for a fight/unnerved, the nerve, you're nervous, nervous that i'm right." tip: we usually are.
FLORENCE + THE MACHINE - I'M NOT CALLING YOU A LIAR
first of all, her voice. secondly, this song worries and loves with equal intensity. "i love you so much, i'm gonna let you kill me." that wavering yet passionate devotion is exquisite.
BEST COAST - CRAZY FOR YOU
remember that duality we mentioned? "want to hate you but then i kiss you/ want to kill you but then i'd miss you." yeah, now you do.
JOY DIVISION - LOVE WILL TEAR US APART
it's hard to believe this song was written in 1979. even still, the message is entirely current.
CRYSTAL CASTLES - NOT IN LOVE
alright, you're probably still in love, but this song feels so good to belt and pretend that you're not anyway.
ROBYN - CRY WHEN YOU GET OLDER
"love hurts when you do it right," indeed, it does.
KLEER UP (FT. LYKKE LI) - UNTIL WE BLEED
sweetly tragic, lykke li's voice is sticky and mysterious as she croons about love's hurts and misunderstandings. "then love until we bleed, then fall apart in parts."
THE NATIONAL - CONVERSATION 16
oh this piece of lyrical tragedy. two people trying, wishing, faking and "living on coffee and flowers." bitter love and fanciful longings.
THE ANTLERS - SYLVIA
this song hovers between abrasive and morose yet still pulls at your emotionally fragile heartstrings. example: "please, please calm down. steady out, i'm terrified/sorry i want us to ally, but you swing on little knives."
THE AVETT BROTHERS - THE BALLAD OF LOVE AND HATE
we're pretty honest on this blog, so we'll be really honest and tell you that when this song came on in the car this summer, we both lost it. but crying in the car with your best friend at three in the morning is part of life. and love. and hate.
BON IVER - COME TALK TO ME
let's talk it out, love. let's make it better.
TALLEST MAN ON EARTH - YOU'RE GOING BACK
"let us float in the tears, let us cry from the laughters." because good love has both.
STORNOWAY - LONG DISTANCE LULLABY
we don't necessarily like to consider ourselves to be sappy romantics, but if a man sang this to us, we're pretty sure we'd fall. hard.
BECK'S RECORD CLUB - NEVER TEAR US APART
we thought we'd finish off a complex playlist with a song laced with surety and hope. plus, the violin in this song is sublime.
YEAH YEAH YEAHS - HYSTERIA (ACOUSTIC)
can i be vulnerable with you, kind readers? i'm in love with a boy who loves me back. "no wonder, no wonder, other half/ strange steps, take us back, take us back." what can i say? i'm a fool. but i love him.
there you have it-- love in its beautiful duality.
